So…a book!

I know I don’t normally post on Sundays but this isn’t a normal post. It’s more of an announcement.

I’m writing a book.

Well, more accurately, I have written a book and I am now in the last bits of editing.

It’s a non-fiction parenting book collecting together the parenting posts here and adding in a load more stuff.

It’s called Being a Dad is Bloody Brilliant: The TasteHitch Guide to Parenting.

If only I could have told myself then what I know now...my son (in white) a few hours old.
If only I could have told myself then what I know now…my son (in white) a few hours old.

The idea came about for two reasons. Firstly, when I was preparing to be a dad there wasn’t really a book that reflected how I was feeling. A surprising number of the dad books out there are written by women telling men what to do. I get enough of that at home…

The ones that are written by men fall into two categories. Aggressive meathead barks instructions from the page on how to be a REAL MAN. Or whimsical folk-tinged emotional mumbo-jumbo. ‘Make your child the flower-child’.

I’d rather not, actually mate.

I wanted the book for the normal guy who did manly stuff (watch sport, drink beer, use every item in the kitchen when cooking) but also feels and accepts emotions (yes, I cried at the end of Cool Runnings – but then who didn’t?)

Secondly, the feedback I received on my posts here was very kind and encouraged me to think that maybe people might want to read what I had to say. In that regard, you only have yourselves to blame.

It will be released on Amazon Kindle ideally, just before Christmas.

When that day comes (I’ll, of course, announce it on here) and if you find yourself on Amazon, doing your Christmas shopping, and you think – ‘Our Jack’s just had his first child, what parenting book should I get him?’ could you possibly consider mine as an option? I’d really appreciate it.

I’m hoping to keep the price low for the first few days after it officially comes out so it shouldn’t break the bank either.

And yes, that was the softest sell you’ll ever see.

Back tomorrow with part two of ‘Escape from New Zealand’…

If you’d like a taste of the kind of thing that will appear in the book, you could do worse than check out this link here.

    1. Ace news! Good luck mate. I have no real idea of what I’m doing but it has made me go all giddy with excitement. I am almost doing star jumps. Almost, it’s bloody hot down on tha plains.

Edit:*the* plains. I’ve not gone all ghetto. Not until my bulk order of bandanas has been delivered at any rate.

      1. I have no idea what I’m doing, too. Are you just doing an e-book or print on demand as well? I’m doing an e-book, print and audio (because I’m crazy). I’m so curious now about what you are doing! Based on what I’ve read here, you are a funny and creative writer. Good luck to you, too!

      2. Thanks mate. It’s just going to be doing an ebook via kdp and then a print book through create space. It seems to be the easiest for my first go. How are you getting yours out there? I’m far more nervous about it then I thought I would be. How are you feeling? Have you posted about what your book is about? If so I’ve missed it but link me up and I’ll have a look-see. 🙂

      3. I had a blog dedicated to it, but it’s messy and not as up-to-date as I’d like it to be. Am I nervous? Of course, but mostly exasperated that it has taken me so long to do.

Here’s the short book blurb version: {the missing teacher} is about embracing Waldorf education with my head, heart and hands, immersing myself into the work and getting fired; it’s about why it happened, how it affected my life, and the ultimate lesson I learned – everyone is a teacher.

Now, I realize it’s not for everyone, so….don’t feel any pressure to reply, but if you want to share your book blurb, I’d like to see it. For me, this is by far the most challenging aspect of the process..

      4. I haven’t got it together yet, precisely because it is so hard. That’s the big job this weekend.

Once done of course I’ll send it through. It would be good to get a third opinion (my wife often gets roped into proof-reading duties. Sometimes at gunpoint.)

        Cheers!

      1. I agree completely. And I’ve already changed my book blurb – a total redo. Working on the cover and letting it rest before looking at it and screaming all over again. So much work! Arrrrgggggggg!

  1. I like the down to earth, middle ground concept. It sounds like it has a very broad appeal. Best of luck. I’ll be sure to mention it to any guys I know who are having kids.

  3. Well, I just purchased a book by one Blogger here that I follow (it actually arrived yesterday), and the only problem I see with yours is that in about a month or so, I’m going to be 58, and my 38-year-old daughter gets real upset these days if I ask her if she needs her nappie changed (especially if I ask her in public – go figure -). So, unless I buy it as a gift for someone, and most of my peers are either long past the baby stage, or doing a whole lot better than I thought they were doing, I just don’t know what I would do with a book of that nature. Just how funny are you? Seriously though, give me a couple days to see if I know anyone who needs that kind of Christmas gift – I already know you’re a hell of a writer, otherwise I wouldn’t hang around here so much. I’ll let you know what I find.

      1. I’ve solved the problem. You just have to write a sci-fi novel that can be sold, edited, and published next week, so I can run out to the local Chapters and purchase my copy in time for Christmas. Oh, any thoughts on how you could slip an autograph into the copy I purchase? Lol.

  4. Congratulations! I literally LOL’d at the ” A surprising number of the dad books out there are written by women telling men what to do. I get enough of that at home…”

Moms do hover and I’m guilty of that as well, until I learned to let go and let my hubby parent our kids the way he does. (Kids are still alive and healthy btw) 😀 By doing so, I got more time for myself, kids get balanced parenting, and they bond with their dad in a language they share, which is somewhat different from the language of mothering.

I hope your book will do well!

Thanks for dropping by my blog!

    1. I agree 100%. I love being a dad and glad that my son is given huge amounts of love from us both. We are a team really.

That was a mean joke at my wife’s expense. She is an amazing woman really 🙂

  5. Wow, how exciting is this! It is a very original idea, so I do hope you will find your dream readers. 🙂 I am writing a book myself (fiction) but it will probably take me years to announce it is ready. 😉

    1. Thanks for the support. I was quite nonchalant until people replied on here saying nice things. Now I know it’s got to be good (because I’ll be asking people for their hard earned cash) and I feel less cocksure.

Oh well, I can always pop a load of jokes about poo in it…they go down well.
